FOLLOW UP: The Georgia Department of Transportation announced the bridge would be rebuilt by June 15 re-opening a key roadway for vehicles traveling in Atlanta.

Atlanta-area drivers, already stymied by detours from the I-85 overpass collapse, experienced another traffic snafu when westbound lanes of I-20 West buckled on Monday, April 17th.

Many motorists are beginning to ask…Is Atlanta an example of America’s crumbling infrastructure? Debates are currently under way on Capitol Hill to address upcoming road project approvals throughout the United States.

FACTS: The I-85 Atlanta overpass collapse occurred very close to downtown. However, most trucking traffic is not prevalent in the downtown district. Most freight congestion in Atlanta takes place on Interstate 285 which circumnavigates downtown Atlanta.

The Thursday March 31 #atlantafire #ATLtraffic transportation crisis in Atlanta continues to wreak havoc on trucking routes. When an incident of this magnitude takes place, it becomes necessary for Highway Transport adapt and re-route to new and various trucking lanes. This is the type of transportation snafu that can cause route mileage to increase as our tanker truck fleet scrambles to adapt and discover the best alternate routes to customer locations. In the coming days and weeks, Atlanta-based customers may notice variations in their mileage charges.

Highway Transport planners responded quickly to shift routes to accommodate customers in response to the serious Buckhead Atlanta I-85 bridge collapse that created Thursday March 31 traffic gridlock. No one was harmed, but traffic was halted for miles on Thursday in Midtown Atlanta when a fire began under the I-85 bridge in the Buckhead area near Piedmont Ave. At this time, the cause of the 5:00 pm rush hour fire is yet to be determined. The fire weakened the I-85 overpass structure causing a large section to collapse.

For anyone who might be driving in Atlanta in the coming days, check out the following map of the collapse area, which also indicates detour routes.
